Aims and Objectives
This module aims to:
- provide students with an understanding of the theory involved in analysing, representing and organising knowledge;
- provide students with practical skills in the application of this theory to domains of knowledge;
- introduce students to the functionality of LMS and the construction of MARC records.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will have obtained:
- an understanding of the theoretical principles involved in analysing, representing and organising knowledge;
- an understanding of the role of the organisation of knowledge and its application in library and information services;
- practical transferable skills in cataloguing, classification and other methods of organising and describing knowledge.
Syllabus
- Principles behind the organisation of knowledge, of document representation and of the universe of knowledge
- Theory and practice of vocabulary control, subject analysis, facet analysis, and other methods of representation
- Library-specific tools, standards and systems such as Library Management Systems (LMS), MARC, FRBR, RDA, LCSH, DDC and LCC
- Generalised tools and systems, including but not limited to thesauri, taxonomies, faceted classification, ontologies and tagging
- Metadata: Linked Data/RDF/Semantic Web, Dublin Core, and other schemas
Students will also complete a series of practical exercises in these areas during the labs.
