Assessment

Students will complete an individual assignment in Semester 1 (50% of the marks) and an individual assignment in Semester 2 (50% of the marks).

This module aims to:

provide students with an understanding of the theory involved in analysing, representing and organising knowledge;
provide students with practical skills in the application of this theory to domains of knowledge;
introduce students to the functionality of LMS and the construction of MARC records.

On completion of this module students will have obtained:

an understanding of the theoretical principles involved in analysing, representing and organising knowledge;
an understanding of the role of the organisation of knowledge and its application in library and information services;
practical transferable skills in cataloguing, classification and other methods of organising and describing knowledge.

Principles behind the organisation of knowledge, of document representation and of the universe of knowledge
Theory and practice of vocabulary control, subject analysis, facet analysis, and other methods of representation
Library-specific tools, standards and systems such as Library Management Systems (LMS), MARC, FRBR, RDA, LCSH, DDC and LCC
Generalised tools and systems, including but not limited to thesauri, taxonomies, faceted classification, ontologies and tagging
Metadata: Linked Data/RDF/Semantic Web, Dublin Core, and other schemas

Students will also complete a series of practical exercises in these areas during the labs.
