Students will complete an individual assignment in Semester 1 (50% of the marks) and an individual assignment in Semester 2 (50% of the marks).

Aims and Objectives

This module aims to:

  • provide students with an understanding of the theory involved in analysing, representing and organising knowledge;
  • provide students with practical skills in the application of this theory to domains of knowledge;
  • introduce students to the functionality of LMS and the construction of MARC records.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students will have obtained:

  • an understanding of the theoretical principles involved in analysing, representing and organising knowledge;
  • an understanding of the role of the organisation of knowledge and its application in library and information services;
  • practical transferable skills in cataloguing, classification and other methods of organising and describing knowledge.

Syllabus

  • Principles behind the organisation of knowledge, of document representation and of the universe of knowledge
  • Theory and practice of vocabulary control, subject analysis, facet analysis, and other methods of representation
  • Library-specific tools, standards and systems such as Library Management Systems (LMS), MARC, FRBR, RDA, LCSH, DDC and LCC
  • Generalised tools and systems, including but not limited to thesauri, taxonomies, faceted classification, ontologies and tagging
  • Metadata: Linked Data/RDF/Semantic Web, Dublin Core, and other schemas

Students will also complete a series of practical exercises in these areas during the labs.
